Mantan Gubernur Sumatera Barat penerima Bung Hatta Award 2004, saat menjabat Bupati Solok. Dia seorang pejabat yang konsisten menegakkan aturan dan tidak korupsi. Namun, dia sendiri merasa penghargaan itu sangat berat dan mungkin saja belum pantas. Lulusan FH Universitas Andalas Padang (1982) itu menapak karier mulai dari staf biasa di Kantor Ditsospol Pemprov Sumatera Barat.
Setelah sempat sebagai sekretaris pribadi Gubernur Sumbar, secara mengejutkan dalam usia 36 tahun ia dipercaya sebagai Kepala Biro Humas Pemprov Sumbar. Dianggap mengejutkan karena pada era itu tak lazim, seorang staf dan pegawai negeri sipil (PNS) yang golongannya III C menjabat kepala biro yang biasanya posisi ini diisi pejabat bergolongan IV A atau III D senior.
Namun, baru satu setengah tahun sebagai kepala biro humas, pada 2 Agustus 1995 Gamawan Fauzi terpilih menjadi Bupati Solok. Komitmen dan konsistensinya dalam menegakkan aturan dan antikorupsi membuat ayah tiga putra-putri ini bisa mulus melewati eforia reformasi sehingga pada 20 Agustus 2000 secara demokratis terpilih kembali memangku jabatan Bupati Solok periode kedua.
